The Pursuit of Wellness

The prevailing healthcare system of Sri Lanka is predominantly based on the widespread use of western medical practices, although healthcare consists of both traditional and western medical practices. Amidst the present economic crisis of the country, the western medical system has all but collapsed.

The collapse of the medical industry centred on western medical practices brought in by the economic crisis is due to both medical professionals leaving the country for better prospects and the shortage of medicine and medical equipment arising from the inability to afford.

Although traditional medicinal practices are better recognised and is successfully practiced in rural Sri Lanka, the government’s intervention to popularise traditional medicine throughout Sri Lanka remains to be insignificant.

The role of healthy citizens in progress related to economic, social, political and cultural dynamics cannot be overestimated. Therefore, it is imperative to build a developed, functional health care system within Sri Lanka.
